Cataracts are a common eye condition that afflicts millions of people all over the globe. We perform cataract surgery to correct the problem. Yet, as they say, prevention is better than treatment. Here, are some tips for preventing cataracts.
Preventing Cataracts the Natural Way
- Quit smoking. This advice can be applied to almost every disease. Smoking is known to increase free radical damage, leading to a greater possibility of developing cataracts. When smoking is stopped in the long term, it reduces the risk of developing cataracts by up to 25 percent.
- Eat foods and substances rich in vitamins C and E and beta-carotene. Such anti-oxidants remove existing free radicals in our body, protecting our eyes from the development of cataracts. If you take multivitamins, your risk for cataracts can be reduced by up to 60 percent.
- Take supplements on a long-term basis. It takes regular, long-term intake to reap the greatest benefits from such minerals. In a study released in the Journal of Public Health in America, cataract-preventing benefits are only seen in patients who have been taking supplements for 10 years or longer.
