LASIK is an innovative laser eye procedure that can dramatically improve vision conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and even astigmatism. However, it’s important to know that LASIK is not for everyone and that some patients are not ideal candidates for this procedure. There are a number of factors that your ophthalmologist will take into consideration when determining whether or not you are able to undergo LASIK surgery.
Some of those considerations include:
- Your age. It is advised that patients be at least 18 years old before considering LASIK surgery.
- Your eye health. You should be without eye diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma prior to receiving LASIK treatment. You should also be free of any injury or infection of the eye.
- Stability. The most well known prerequisite for LASIK surgery is vision stability. It is important that your vision have been stable for at least one year prior to receiving LASIK. This ensures the long-term success of your procedure.
- Corneal thickness. Your ophthalmologist will measure the thickness of your cornea. You must have a minimal cornea thickness of .5 mm in order to allow for proper flap creation and healing.
- Other health concerns: you should not have uncontrolled diabetes or an autoimmune disease prior to undergoing LASIK surgery. Also LASIK is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or nursing.
